Kudos to many at FHC

Let me take this opportunity to thank the hardworking members who have stepped up to take charge of and/or help FHC at Bingo, the Bulletin, the Board of Education, programming, and all the other various positions that have been recently filled anew. All too often we are quick to find fault and or complain about shortcomings. I believe we should praise good work; it is appreciated and respected.

I am also extremely proud of our volunteers and the renewed spirit of involvement and dedication that is at work at FHC.

I am proud of people taking charge of various aspects of FHC life and moving us forward.

We should also never forget those who continue to work hard in their various capacities year in and year out. They continue to provide a solid backbone to FHC throughout the years.

Finally, anyone who wants to get involved at FHC, please feel free to contact the FHC office, or you can certainly E-mail me.

Shalom. Jeremy

Righteous indignation does not solve anything

As I study the world's problems in the News and in history, I have found that righteous indignation has caused more problems, including anger, bitterness, death and destruction, than most other forces.

Why must righteous indignation ("My way or the highway"), either on the world stage or even on a local level, create enemies out of friendships. Why must one person's sense of right be stronger or more powerful than another person's moral direction. Or maybe better stated, why must I impose my moral values and direction upon another person's moral compass. ( I am not referring to compliance with existing secular law, since that is the embodiment of the society's moral compass at a given time.)

The concept of righteous indignation, as it is discussed herein, also takes into account a very important principle, that there generally must be at least two forces asserting their moral values as against eachother.

I experience this issue every day whether it is dealing with my children, who are still developing their morals and ethics, to friends and professional relationships where people seek to either move or direct my moral compass in a direction that I would not necessarily want it to go.

Righteous indignation suggests that if you do not agree with my moral position, then your way is wrong, improper, misguided and morally reprehensible. Even spiritual leaders, be it an extremist or a moderate, believe, in their heart of hearts that they have a moral imperative to assert their righteous indignation.

In my opinion, spiritual leaders should provide guidance and provide the pathways for hopefully, morally acceptable and G-d like morals and ethics. Thereafter, by example or by prodding, or by suggestion, the flock absorb the lesson and follow the path.

In my opinion, a spiritual leader should not, however, become a gabor or fighter who feels that every moral or ethical principle that that spiritual leader feels is a knock-down fight to the finish. Spiritual leaders of that ilk do not allow people to walk the pathway on their own. Rather, the path becomes a forced walk, which some find wholly unacceptable and others simple get off the path altogether.

Sometimes true moral leadership entails more than simply stating a position in a forceful and righteous way. Sometimes, moral leadership requires nuance, suggestion and logical reasoning.

Aggressive righteous indignation causes many people to become defensive, hurt and confused. Aggressive righteous indignation also causes many people to simply shut down and ignore the spiritual leader who acts in that fashion.

Instead, in my opinion, a true spiritual leader knows when to push, prod, suggest, and pull back .

Sometime when a spiritual leader lets go and allows the flock to analyze an issue without constant pressure to accept "my way or the highway", the message of the spiritual leader is heard and absorbed.

Let us hope that all spiritual leaders and their repective flocks in the world learn that righteous indignation without moderation creates more problems than it solves.

Last night FHC had a thousand fathers and mothers....

Let me take this opportunity to express my thanks

I Thank G-d for the terrific weather;

the members of the Bikkur Holim Committee who helped out;

the people who got the word out about the event;

the babysitter who watched my kids;

the young ladies who helped serve the food;

the people who brought extra goodies and drinks;

the folks who did errands or who brought people who could not get to the event on their own,

the individuals who donated money even though they could not attend;

those who gave more money than what was asked;

the person who donated the Silent Auction item which will give us a nice $$$ boost;

the guests who joined in the food and drink and made the event memorable and fun;

the guests who gave us happy news to celebrate, and

last but not least, my lovely wife who worked tirelessly to make this event happen.

Since checks are still coming in, I anticipate by the end of the week I should be able to provide a final tally as to what was raised. I commend each and everyone who was involved (in any manner) with this event.

Thank-you again.

Defibrillator (and paramedic) saves life :read below

FYI: I have been before Judge Katz many times. Good Man.....

While it is never fortunate to have a heart attack, it is fortunate that he had his heart attack where a defibrillator (and a paramedic) were with him.

G-d forbid we ever have an event at FHC that requires a defibrillator (and a top notch first aid kit) at least we will have them (in the very near future.) Shalom. Jeremy

Bronx clerk moonlights as paramedic, may have saved judge's life
August 1, 2006, 8:56 PM EDT
NEW YORK (AP) _ A state Supreme Court clerk who moonlights as a paramedic may have saved the life of a judge who had a heart attack in chambers Tuesday. Bronx Judge Bertram Katz, 76, slumped over in his chair midmorning and started turning blue. Court employees called John McConnell, a paramedic with the Fire Department of New York for 14 years, who started CPR.

"He had a pulse, but it was very weak and rapid," McConnell said. "When I checked him again he had lost his pulse." McConnell moved Katz from the chair to a couch, ripped open his shirt and used the court's defibrillator. Katz, who never regained consciousness, was taken by ambulance to Lincoln Hospital, where he was in critical condition. Fire department officials said McConnell, who has worked for the court for eight years, saved Katz's life. Court spokesman David Bookstaver said most employees know of McConnell's night job. "We're lucky to have a good clerk who is also a really good paramedic," he said. "It's just really fortunate for us, especially in situations like this." McConnell was humble about the incident. When asked what he did after Katz was taken away, he said: "I just went back to work." Katz retired as a Bronx Supreme Court judge in May and was working as a judicial hearing officer.

Walk-ins welcome for August 6, 2006 Cocktail Party fundraiser

The weather report says that Sunday 8/6/06 should be much cooler than what we have had this week. I'm planning on getting lots of ice to "charge your glasses."

My lovely wife is making a kosher run to Fairway to get some (hopefully) delicious foods to partake with the liquid refreshments.

I'm pleased to announce that checks keep coming in and the response has been great. (If you cannot attend, you can still make a donation. Just mail a check as stated below.

If you have not sent in your check, you can still come to this Shock FHC Party.

Bring your contribution check made payable to First Hebrew Congregation and place in the memo section (Shock FHC Party)

If you need directions, may I suggest that you e-mail me today or tomorrow so that you have them.

In summary, to get to our house get onto Lafayette, (driving away from Hudson Valley Hospital Center) Second left is Lyncrest. We are number 4, Cortlandt Manor NY.

Shalom. Jeremy
